Hannover Messe: The Perfect Swing for Wind Power

As part of the Subcontracting trade show, at booth A16 in hall 5, ContiTech Vibration Control is presenting diverse application possibilities for rubber. A very special highlight is to be seen in bearing components made of elastomer composites and intended for effective and cost-efficient wind energy generation. They ensure the functional reliability of wind power stations, improve damping and reduce noise emissions. On the whole, the products’ long service life minimizes the maintenance expense.

Ideas from our product range: MEGI bushings, the elastic show of strength

Applications

Megi bushes are used as flexible joints in motor vehicles and all branches of mechanical engineering. Megi bushes can withstand high radial stress because they are prestressed using a special process. The axially stiff AS bushes are excellent for use with high thrust loads. Megi bushes can be subjected in continuous operation to an angular distortion of + 15° whereby a return moment proportional to the angle of twist developed. As flexible joints, Megi bushes are completely maintenance-free. They operate noiselessly, are sound insulating and have a long service life.

Description

Generally, the outer tube of Megi bushes is held in place by a pressed fit or by the use of clamp bearings. The inner tube can be held, for example, by pressure against the end phase. In this case, the bolt passing through the H9 hole in the bush presses the checked collar (e. g. plates) against the end phase of the inner tube.

Technical Data

Megi bushes cover a range of radial loads up to 20 kN depending on the bush used. Further details are given in the tables.

Vibration Control products made of Vulkollan® D 15 polyurethane elastomers

ContiTech Vibration Control is a licensed processor of Vulkollan® D15, made by Bayer MaterialScience AG. This hot-cast polyurethane elastomer is used in the manufacture of suspension and bearing elements subject to high dynamic stressing as well as for tires, wheels and roles that must exhibit exceptional wear resistance. Vulkollan® D15 has remarkable impact resilience. It is largely immune to deformation and exhibits exceptional cracking resistance. A temperature-stable polyurethane material, it is exceptionally stable under exposure to ultraviolet radiation, ozone, grease and oil.

Knowing for sure well ahead: life cycle costing

Rubber adheres to material laws of its very own. At the very latest users become aware of this characteristic when an elastomer component fails unexpectedly. In the future surprises and risks like this can be reduced. ContiTech Vibration Control has developed a service life costing concept for elastomer components.

There is practically no getting around elastomer materials when power units, systems or assemblies, have to be suspended or supported. For the most part rubber is nonwearing – throughout its life. But how long is a product life? From a life cycle costing perspective it does make a difference, though, whether a component holds up for 200,000 or 400,000 operating hours. In the past it was very difficult to say anything meaningful in this regard. One thing is certain, though. The service life of a rubber material is limited. It is exposed to dynamic stressing, is stretched, is subjected to tension and becomes deformed.
